  • Left his Home Farm, on Concession XIII, Lots 28 & 29, South of the Village of Walton and West of Leadbury, Ontario, Canada(West of Hi-Way No. 12), in 1882 at the age of 19 years, travelling West, probably by horseback, to the Hartney District of Southwestern Manitoba; John, sometimes nick-named Jack, worked on farms and any job available in the area, later operating a Livery Stable in Hartney, Manitoba, a routine followed by many of the early settlers until they could acquire sufficient funds to acquire their own stake. John Wright worked this way for some 8 years, until he had enough funds to think about purchasing his own land, marriage and raising a Family.

He apparently returned home from time to time for visits, and keeping in touch with an old family acquaintance, Lavina Tiernan. Someway, John convinced Lavina then some 16 years of age, that she should come with him West to the small village of Hartney, Manitoba. This romance resulted in marriage to Lavina Tiernan, on Dec. 28, 1892 at Brandon, Manitoba.

The couple lived at Hartney for 3 years and in 1895, homesteaded a farm in the Melgund District; they later moved to Section 23-4-23 and Section 14-4-23 at Deloraine as their home place, and built a stone farmhouse; due to ill health John moved the Family to Winnipeg, Manitoba for a short time returning to the farm in 1908, where they continued to raise their Family and successfully work their Farmstead.

In 1920 John homesteaded some land at Bowsman River, Manitoba, built a log house and moved the family there leaving Clarence, his oldest Son and Wife Lillie on the home place farm in Deloraine. John returned to the home farm at Deloraine in 1924 and farmed there until 1927 when he and Lavina retired to Winnipeg, leaving Son Jack on the home farm. Clarence Wright Family moved to Detroit, Michigan.

John Wright was a Member of Orange Lodge in Winnipeg and wore the Sash of the Royal Black Knights; very musical, played drums, violin and danced Irish jigs. Very outgoing individual, nice personality and a dedicated family man; many in the family were musical; loved to entertain at home and community affairs. John and Lavina lived out their life in Winnipeg, enjoying the company of many Family members who lived in the area.

  • Clarence Graham Wright 1893-1987

(Oldest Son of John & Lavina Tiernan Wright)

    Notes:

Clarence Graham Wright born on a farm at Deloraine, Manitoba, Canada, oldest Son of John and Lavina Wright, hard working very conservative, honest and moral individual, loyal to family and friends.

He immigrated to the USA in about 1923 locating in Detroit, Michigan and was very successfulin several entrepreneurial small businesses mainlyGrocery Stores and petroleum Service Stations.

The Family faced great hardship in the depression of 1929, losing business and home, and elected torelocate in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada near both parents.Such economic conditions faced many Families in both the US and Canada during the great Depression of 1929, resulting in traumatic upheaval and serious emotional distress and hardship.

Clarence found that economic conditions in Canada were far worse than those in the United States, and employment was even more difficult to come by. The Family lived in the Winnipeg, Manitoba area of Canada for some 3 years migrating back to Detroit, Michigan in 1932, still facing the very difficult economic conditions of the times as most Americans during this severe national depression.

A very friendly hand was extended to the Family by our dear relatives, Aunt Agnes and Uncle Charlie Wright, in fact theyevenopened up their home to the Clarence Wright Family and Charlie soon found work for Clarence in the construction trade. With a strong Family work ethic, all members quickly found work and the Family soon regained economic stability.

Clarencehad a wonderful outgoing personality, easily made friends, andworkedand livedin the Detroit area for greater part of working life. In 1952, Clarence and Lillie moved toLos Angeles, Californianear his Son Kenneth and Daughter-in-law Nancy.

At age 60 years and with a flair for entrepreneurial activity, he again established his own business, and very successfully managed andoperated an Oil & Gas Service Station in theLos Angeles area.

Clarence and Lilliepurchased a home in the suburb of of Los Angeles,Reseda, and continued to work in the area until he retired in 1967.

Clarence had a severe and disabling stroke in 1968, however enjoyed a remarkable recovery and lived to the age of 92 years.

He was a Member of the Reford Masonic Lodge, at Detroit, Michigan.

  • Dorothy Edna Wright: Born in 1903, the year the Stone Farmhouse was built on the Farmstead at Deloraine, Manitoba. She lived there with her 3 Brothers and 5 Sisters until she was about 14 years old. At this time her parents sent her to live with two Seamstresses in Town to learn sewing as a Trade, something she did not really enjoy, but learned to do very well.

In 1920, when the Family moved to Bowsman River, the Superintendent of Schools asked if Dorothy could teach at the local School, a little log building which included all grades. Dorothy saved her earnings to enter Nursing School at Misericordia Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She dearly loved her chosen profession and nursed privately most of her life and at one time owned a Nursing Home in Victoria, B.C.

Dorothy met Dr. Charles R. Oke, in 1922, whose home was in Boisevain, Manitoba. Dr. Oke came from Sarnia, Ontario where he had trained to be a Dentist. Dr. Oke was in the Canadian Dental Corp., and served his Country during both World War I and II.

On December 23, 1923, Dorothy and Charles (Doc) were married and made their home in Deloraine, Manitoba with the Dentist Office in their home; Dorothy (Dolly) helping with the patients. Daughter Audrey Yvonne was born in Deloraine in 1925.

About 1934 Dorothy and Charles were divorced, and a couple of years later she married Daniel Vincent Kennedy, a Clothing Manufacturer. In 1940 Geraldine Ann was born and in 1944 the Family moved to Vancouver, B.C.

Dorothy was an excellent Mother, who really believed the sun rose and set on her two Daughters. She loved to entertain and enjoyed playing the piano. Her favorite place to live was Victoria, B.C., and her last few years were spent enjoying her Great Grandchildren who knew her a "G.G."

Everyone in her Family through the generations owns two or three beautiful

Afghan blankets she made for them!

Dorothy died peacefully May 30, 1988 and now rests in Boundary Bay Cemetery, in South Delta, B.C., Canada.
