It is reported that Henry Tiernan, emigrated from County Tyrone, Ireland, to Canada sometime between 1847 and 1850, with two of his Brothers, William Tiernan and John Tiernan. Sometime later, William the elder Brother moved to the United States and found his way to the California gold fields. John the younger Brother, is presumed to have returned to his home in Tyrone County, Ireland. It is said that nearly 2 million Irish crossed the Atlantic to North America during and following the famine of '47 and '48.

There was once an area of Ireland that was know by the ancient name of Breffny. It encompassed those parts of the Land which are now designated as the Counties of Cavan, Leitram, Fermanagh and certain parts of Roscommon. This was the homeland of the O'Rourkes, the McQuires, the O'Reilly's and the O'Connors, The McTiernans, The McGowans, the McMorrows, the O'Donohoe, the McMannus Sept and others.

The name Tiernan in Gaelic, is MacTighearnain, derived from the Gaelic word "tighearna" meaning a Lord. Sometimes we find it spelled with the aspirated "T", MacThighearnain, which phonetically anglicized as MacKiernan. The Chiefs of the Tullyhunco Sept were sometimes called MacKiernan instead of MacTiernan. Today through0ut Ireland and the Western World, wherever the name turns up, we find several spellings being used i.e. Ternan, MacTiernan, MacKiernan, Tiernan, Kiernan and Kernan.

O'Tiernan with it reference to "Grandson of" seems to have fallen into disuse.

For the most part, history records these Septs or Tribal Groups as being drovers of cattle, but the same accounts tell us of their love for horses, for an outdoor life and eventually of settling down to till the soil.

Breffny was a Land and a People that stood in the pathway of invasion and counter invasion; it was on the road that crossed Ireland from West to East. It was devastated long ago by the waves of Vikings who pillaged and burned the settlements, killing or carrying off many of the population in the process but eventually settling down and inter-marrying with the natives to create a new people.

The Tiernans, according to Irish historians, formed several Septs or Tribal Groups. Two of these seem to have gained more importance than the others. The one adhering to the O'Connor as its head and the other to the O'Rourke. Those found in the Cavan-Leitram area usually went without the prefix Mac or Mc; when Mac or Mc is retained, there may be a number of diffirent spellings such as McTernan, or MacKiernan.

There was a separate Sept of the MacTiernans who held territory in the Northeastern part of the County Roscommon. This group was apparently different from the Tullyhunco Sept of Cava, The Roscommon Sept being descended from Tiernan, Grandson of Turlough Mor O'Connor, who was once proclaimed King of Ireland. The Cavan Sept is according to the available records, a branch of the O'Rourkes.

Land Records of 1876-77: Locate the Henry Tiernan Family, leasing Concession VIII, North Half of Lot 15 in Morris Township, Northwest of the Village of Walton, and Southwest of the Village of Brussels, Huron County, Ontario, Canada

Henry Tiernan as reported in the Seaforth Exposition Jan 26, 1877, died in Morris Township, Huron County, Ontario, on January 9, 1877, age 45 years, leaving Sarah Tiernan, age 40 years, with 9 children. This must have been a tremendous shock and trauma to the Family.

The Morris County Atlas of 1879 located Mrs. Tiernan at Concession X, Lots 51 & 52, Morris Township, on the Walton/Blyth Road, near the village of Walton, Huron County, Ontario, Canada.

The Census of 1881 Morris Township, lists Mrs. Tiernan as a Widow, Religion Church of England, born in Ireland, living with her 9 Children as follows: William Age-21 hrs./Mary Age-19 Yrs./Elizabeth Age-17 Yrs./Susan Age-16 Yrs./Martha Age-14 Yrs./Margaret Age-11 Yrs., Robert Age-9 Yrs./

    Annie Age-8 Yrs./Lavina Age-6 Yrs.

As a matter of interest Note: The Census of 1881, McKillop Township, Huron County, Ontario, Canada, lists Euphemia Wright, age 54 years, & Family of 5 children, (Henry-age 27 Yrs./Robert-age 25 Yrs./William-age 20 Yrs./John-age 18 Yrs./Francis-age 16 Yrs.) in McKillop Township, Huron County, married, Presbyterian religion, Occupation Farmer, residing on Concession XIII Lots 28 & 29, South of the Village of Walton and West of Leadbury, and West of Hi-Way #12. (Euphemia & Alexander had separated March 132, 1877, by Court Decree, and April 27, 1878, sold the West Half of the South Half 112 acres, of Concession XIII, Lot 28.

At this time John Wright was 18 Yrs. of Age, and Lavina Tiernan was 6 Yrs. of Age, and these Familys were apparently acquainted (and living within 2 miles of each other); It is reported that John Wright traveled to Hartney, Manitoba in about 1882 at 19 Yrs. of age; no doubt John returned home from time to time as a romance developed between John Wright and Lavina Tiernan, as at some point in time, Lavina, relocated to Hartney, Manitoba, and married John Wright December 28, 1892 at Brandon, Manitoba, Canada.

Sarah Tiernan and two sons moved to Manitoba in 1887; a family picture documents a portrait that pictures Mrs. Tiernan, daughters Elizabeth as Mrs. George Weidenhammer, Lavina as Mrs. J. Wright, daughter Annie and sons Will and Robert Tiernan.
