  •

  • Birth:  Dec. 17, 1926

    Hollister

    San Benito County

California, USA Death:  Dec. 29, 2012

    Montana, USA

Evelyn F. Stanton died peacefully in her sleep on December 29, 2012 while on a holiday vacation in Montana with many of her children and grandchildren. She was born December 17, 1926 in Hollister, California, where she picked prunes and apricots in her family's orchards.

During World Evelyn Filice ObituaryWar II her family moved to San Francisco, and she graduated from Lowell High School in 1944. She attended UC Berkeley, where she met her future husband, Emmett, a returning Army veteran. They graduated in 1948 and married in 1949. Evelyn obtained her teaching credential and taught Spanish at El Cerrito High School while Emmett attended dental school. The couple moved to San Mateo in 1952, and raised four sons in San Mateo, Hillsborough and Foster City. Her husband predeceased her in 1982.

For more than 40 years Evelyn was an active community volunteer and leader at the local, state and national level. She was a lifetime member of the American Association of University Women, serving as president of the San Mateo Branch (1967-69) and the California State Division (1976-78), as regional vice-president (1979-81), and as national treasurer (1981-83). The San Mateo Branch and California State Division of AAUW endowed a fellowship in her honor in 1978. She was president of the San Mateo County League of Women's Voters (1973-75). With her husband, she co-chaired the Hillsborough Concours d' Elegance in 1966 and the two of them were honored as Hillsborough's Citizens of the Year in 1969. In 1975 she was named "Woman of the Year" by the San Mateo Soroptimist Club, and in 1987 she was elected to the San Mateo County Women's Hall of Fame.

Evelyn served on or chaired civic boards, commissions and task forces too numerous to mention. Some of her notable service was as president of the San Mateo High School PTA, and on the boards of the Mills-Peninsula Hospital, the San Mateo Health Foundation (which she helped found), the Family Service Agency, and the Poplar Center. In one notable promotion for the Poplar Center's annual Haunted House, she led a delegation of "witches" - in full costume - to Disneyland's Haunted Mansion; mercifully, in the days before the TSA.

In 1977 Evelyn returned to the paid workforce as public information coordinator for the Mental Health Association of San Mateo County. By 1979 she had taken over as Executive Director, a position she held until 2003. When she became executive director the MHA had a $17,000 deficit on a budget of $60,000, a staff of 3, and faced an IRS audit. During her tenure the budget grew to $2.5 million, as the agency purchased and rehabilitated seven properties to use for emergency shelter and transitional housing for its clients. MHA played a leadership role in addressing the local AIDs crisis, when no other agency would even respond to a request for proposals. In 1991 the United Way recognized her as Executive Director of the Year.

In her retirement, she read avidly, gardened, followed politics, rooted for the 49'ers, and enjoyed the company of her sons, her daughters-in-law, her grandchildren and her pets.

She is survived by her four sons, Emmett (Marion), Gary (Orla), Greg (Mary) and Dave (Shanna); nine grandchildren, Elizabeth (Kevin Taliaferro), Ann, Emmett, Denise, Christopher, Conor, Brendan, Alexa, and Evan; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sister, Anne Nevin (Chicago), and was predeceased by her brother, Charles Filice (Carmel).

At Evelyn's request, there will be no services, and interment at Golden Gate National Cemetery will be private. Her family will receive visitors on Sunday, January 27, 2013 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm in the Oak Room at the San Mateo Public Library, 55 West 3rd Avenue, San Mateo. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Mental Health Association of San Mateo County, 2686 Spring Street, Redwood City, CA 94063, or to any of the other organizations in which Evelyn was active.
