A number of boys from their high school class joined the national guard at the same time and when they got stationed to Ft. Lewis. Some of the wives went to join them, but Carole, did not go. She did not really feel part of that group." She was also pregnant with Susan at the time. According to newspaper reports and interview with Al Weisner he was released from active service at Ft. Lewis in August of 1962.

The 32nd Infantry Division was an infantry division of the United States Army National Guard that fought primarily during World War I and World War II. It was formed with units from the states of Wisconsin and Michigan. During 1961, the Division was called up for a one year tour of service in the state of Washington during the Berlin Crisis.

On 6 September 1961, with the heightening of the tensions due to the Berlin Crisis, the 32nd Infantry Division was alerted to an impending call-up. The Commanding General, Major General Herbert A. Smith was notified a few days later that the Division was to report on 15 October 1961 to Fort Lewis, Washington for active duty. This was exactly 21 years after their activation date for World War II, at which time then Lt. Col. Herbert A. Smith had been commander of the 2nd Battalion, 128th Infantry. The unit served until August 1962 at Fort Lewis, Washington, and was assigned to the Strategic Army Command. The Division began training as replacements for the 4th Infantry and the 2nd Armored Divisions at Fort Lewis, Washington, and Fort Hood, Texas, in case they were deployed overseas as reinforcements for the Seventh Army in Germany. They returned to Wisconsin without being deployed overseas.[65]

It is likely this was a 1957 Dodge Coronet. According to Hagertys.com "Like the rest of the Chrysler Corporation, the entry-level 1957 Dodge Coronet received a drastic new design courtesy of Virgil Exner. The "Forward Look" styling, dubbed "swept wing" for the Dodge nameplate, featured tall, sweeping fins, copious amounts of chrome trim, wraparound windshields, and exhaust-style taillights. The cars were also long, low, and wide, distinct from anything other manufacturers were putting on the road."
