  • Frank and Rose Fortino first appear on a 1930 census in the U.S. in Hollister, San Benito County, California. They told the enumerator they emigrated to the U.S. from Italy in 1920 and this is proven with a Massachusetts Passenger and Crew List Record from 1920 that places the whole family and relative son the same ship landing in Boston on May 13, 1920.

The family in 1930 consisted of Frank born about 1882 and Rose born about 1883. The children noted on this census in 1930 are Sam, Salvador, James, Mary and Alfred. Frank is an orchard farmer.

In 1940 the family is still intact with Sal, James, Mary and Alfred. We know from our oral family history that Virginia was a child of Frank and Rose. She was born in 1905 in Italy and in 1930 lived in Hollister on Lone Tree Road along with her parents, in fact she was just living two doors down the road.

Virginia was married to Stanley Filice November 15 1925 as recorded in the marriage record. Sam Fortino, one of Virginia's brothers was a witness. This marriage certificate gives Rose her maiden name of Spadafore which is also found on the Massachusetts Passenger and Crew List Record for Rose's name where it is listed as Agata Spadafora.

According to oral and written family history the Fortino's made their way to Chico, California in the mid to late 1940's. Sam Fortino owned a lumber mill and founded the water company in Paradise Pines, California. He wound up building a lot of the homes in Paradise Pines making the town viable. His father Frank, and mother Rose wound up living with family in Chico until their deaths. Frank died in 1954 and Rose died in 1971.
